A dramatic limestone island off the Dorset coast, famous for its Jurassic Coast geology, Portland stone quarries, historic castles, and the iconic Portland Bill lighthouse.
Portland is a great spot for a holiday – as you have to drive across the causeway you feel like you are crossing over onto a private Island. The only draw back is the road can get busy in the morning and the afternoon commute so avoid these times.
Portland is closest to the world famous Chesil beach (which is a pebble beach), which whilst dramatic is not safe for bathing. Sandy beaches are to be found at Wyke or Weymouth.
Definitely, the South West Coast Path encircles the Island so you can take in the dramatic coastal scenery every step of the way.
