Holiday Cottages in Wareham

Yes, there are two great locations to enjoy the Rivers that “protect” the town.  You can walk along the River on Wareham Common, this is the smaller River Piddle.  You can also venture along the River Frome from Wareham Quay.  Go over the bridge on South St and immediately turn left.  The path takes you all the way to Ridge.  Alternatively hire a boat on the Quay and go all the way to Poole Harbour.

If your holiday cottage doesnt have parking, you can use on the public car parks (at time of writing £6 per day).  They are located on the Quay (which gets full very quickly), by St Marys Church and a larger car park at Stretche Rd.  There is also on road parking on side streets further away from the town centre which is not metered.

Wareham is a great place to stay when visiting Dorset being fairly centrally located.  Its called the gateway to the Purbecks as the seaside twon of Swanage is just a twenty minute drive away and Corfe Castle is about 10 minutes (5 miles).  Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are also within easy reach being about 20 minutes away.

Yes, there is a Sainsbury in the town centre and lots of cafes, hardware store and restaurants.  It has a healthy collection of pubs to explore.  There is a new Lidl about 2 miles away at Sandford

In Wareham itself you have the quay to visit and enjoy lunch on the waters edge, take a boat trip along the River Frome or a longer cruise out to Poole Harbour and Jurassic Coast.  There is a good little museum exploring the towns Saxon roots and you can still walk along the old Saxon walls.  There are several good churches to visit.

Nearby there are lots of attractions which include, Bovington Tank Museum, Tyneham Village, Monkey World, Lulworth Cove, Corfe Castle, Studland and Swanage – plenty to fill at a fortnight holiday.

Whilst lots of the local attractions are dotted along the Jurassic Coast and are outdoors – there are several local attractions that can be enjoyed on a windy wet day.  Bovington Tank Museum is all under cover and provides a days entertainment for the whole family (you dont even have to be interested in tanks!).  You could visit one of two excellent farms with the children – Putlake Adventure Farm near Swanage and Farmer Palmers at Organford.  There are several good museums to enjoy especially in Dorchester with the County Museum.

There are a lot of attractions and natural wonders to explore.  I think my itinerary for a three day break would be to arrive an enjoy a first class meal at The Priory on the banks of the River Frome in Wareham (booking essential).  The next day i would visit Corfe Castle and take the steam train down to Swanage after lunch.  Lastly i would probably visit Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, i would pick up my picnic food from Williams the Bakery in Wool on the way down.  And then i would cook tea in my cottage and enjoy a starry night in the garden.  On the last day i would depart from my cottage but i would leave the area until the evening and would spend a fun filled day at Farmer Palmers, tiring the kids out for the journey home!
