Cheesemans Cottage

Cheeseman’s Cottage is a beautiful, thatched 18th Century retreat tucked away on a peaceful country lane in the quiet hamlet of Muckleford. Surrounded by rolling hills and a secure, enclosed garden, this charming two-bedroom cottage sleeps up to five guests and is ideal for couples, friends or families looking to escape to the heart of rural Dorset. Full of character, comfort, and history, it’s everything you’d hope for in a traditional English countryside stay.

Inside, the cottage has been carefully preserved and thoughtfully furnished. The main lounge is full of original charm, with exposed beams, deep-set windows, and a large inglenook fireplace featuring a wood-burning stove and the remains of the old bread oven - perfect for cosy evenings in. A 39" flat-screen TV, DVD player, books, and board games are all provided, making this a welcoming space whatever the weather.

The galley kitchen is well-equipped with an electric oven and induction hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, and washing machine. Just beyond the kitchen, the dining room offers a more formal setting with an antique table seating up to six guests. French doors open directly onto the garden, allowing light and fresh country air to fill the space during warmer months.

Upstairs, two bedrooms enjoy lovely countryside views. The king-size master is spacious and bright, while the second bedroom offers a double bed and an additional single - perfect for a child or fifth guest. A modern family bathroom is located on the first floor and features a bath, separate shower, WC, and basin.

The garden at Cheeseman’s Cottage is a highlight. Enclosed and mainly laid to lawn, it offers a safe space for children and dogs to play, with a patio area, outdoor furniture, and panoramic rural views that change with the seasons. It’s a peaceful spot for a morning coffee or evening glass of wine. Up to three well-behaved dogs are welcome - your first dog stays for free, with a small charge for additional pets. The property also provides off-road parking for two/three vehicles.

Local Area

While it feels a world away from busy roads and towns, the cottage is ideally located for exploring West Dorset. Muckleford is part of the parish of Bradford Peverell, just five miles from Dorchester and seven miles from the coast at Abbotsbury and Weymouth. Dorchester offers an appealing mix of independent shops, heritage sites, and markets, while the seaside towns of Weymouth and Lyme Regis are easily reached for days on the beach or exploring the Jurassic Coast.

The nearby village of Abbotsbury is home to the famous Swannery, Subtropical Gardens, and St Catherine’s Chapel, perched high above Chesil Beach. Closer still are scenic walks across open farmland and along the River Frome, with plenty of quiet spots for picnics or a wander with the dogs. Maiden Castle, Hardy’s Cottage, and the South West Coast Path are all within easy reach, offering a blend of history and natural beauty.

Whether you're exploring the coastline, walking through fields of wildflowers, or simply enjoying the stillness by the fire, Cheeseman’s Cottage offers an authentic and restful Dorset experience.
