The castle is visited by over 100,000 visitors a year who come to marvel at over 1000 years of history. The castle, which is one of the earliest castles to be built using stone in England, has housed many royals, witnessed civil war, and in AD978, was the site of a royal murder when Edward The Martyr met his fate.
