Coastguard Cottage, a semi-detached stone cottage, dates from around 1950 and was renovated in 1994 for holiday accommodation. It enjoys beautiful rural views over farmland with sheep, to the South-East across grazing fields to the sea at Winspit. It is a non-smoking cottage, suitable for families with young children. Dogs not permitted. Travel Cot & Highchair available upon request. Cot Linen & Beach Towels not provided. A gardener may call during your stay. Please note, from May 2023 there are two CCTV cameras installed, one over front garden and pathway and the other one is over looking back garden. The cameras have been installed because of recent oil theft.
Pre-arrival
Bookings/enquiries can be made via Dorset Cottage Holidays. There is a bus service that runs between Swanage (4 miles away) and Worth Matravers, albeit only twice a day! The nearest mainline train station is 8 miles away at the Saxon-walled town of Wareham and taxis are available at the station. The world-renowned pub The Square & Compass, with fossil museum is within comfortable walking distance.
The nearest large supermarkets are in Corner shop in Corfe Castle and service station shops in Harmans Cross. Corfe Village Stores and excellent Dragon Bakery in neighbouring village of Corfe Castle offer local supplies. There are small convenience stores SPAR & Londis on Valley Road, Harman’s Cross & Murco on Valley Road, Swanage. All the main supermarkets will deliver to the cottage if you wish to arrange.
Arrival & Parking
Coastguard Cottage is the third house on the left-hand side of Bonvils Road [unmade Private Road with Footpath sign St. Aldhelm’s Head] after you have passed the dairy buildings & Coastguard Station on your left. There are no street lights but the front door and steps are illuminated by an external light. There is parking for two cars at the top of the garden and more parking in the lay-by before you reach the cottage on the right. There are two SITA bins situated in the car parking area.
Access & Main Entrance
Please note the property is accessed via 14 steps from the parking area. There is a torch for guests to use inside the cottage. There is a safety hand rail. Small sloping front garden on the right with seating area on Purbeck stone patio in front of the property. The front door is 2’9” & hinged on the left. It opens into a lobby [5’6” x 5’6”] with tiled flooring leading to the downstairs WC. The light switch for the hall is located on the right as you enter. All radiators have thermostat settings, adjustable by valve heads, as required.
The downstairs WC, washbasin & shower (electric) room [7’x 3’4”] is accessed by a door [2’6”] straight ahead. The Hallway which is carpeted [16’6” x 6’3”] leads to the right from the porch with access to the sitting room [13’3” x 13’] and dining room [11’4” x 14’] off to the right and the Kitchen [9’6” x 9’9”] straight ahead. Radiator in the hallway controlled by thermostat. Under stairs cupboard contains heating control panel and hot water tank.
There is an alternative back door entrance in the kitchen. This is accessed by a side gate to the left of the property via left side of the cottage. The garden gate door leads into a small side passage with oil tank to your left. There is a Purbeck path to the rear south east facing enclosed garden. Purbeck stone terrace illuminated at night by external light.
The Hall
Coat hooks are located behind the front door on the left. Elevated wooden cupboard containing the fuse box and electric meter on right of front door. Bt HomeHub is located in the wooden cupboard. Smoke Alarm and Co2 alarm. Dyson Hoover stored under stairs.
Ground Floor: Sitting Room
There is a large double glazed bay window, with blinds, looking out to the front garden. Three large sofas, two 3 seaters, and one 2 seater, all with extra cushions (some feather – can be removed on request). Pine coffee table, bookcases and TV with Free Sat & DVD is provided with remote control. There is Wi-Fi. Lighting is a ceiling pendant and there are two standing reading lamps beside the sofas. Thermostat radiator under bay window.
Dining Room
French Doors lead onto garden & raised terrace. There are full length curtains with tie backs. There is a dining table with 8 chairs. Pine dresser with shelves and bottom cupboard containing a wide selection of boardgames & games for children. Thermostat radiator right of door. Standard lamp, radio & CD player. Armchair.
Kitchen
With utility area [11’6” x 4’]. Large window with blind looking out onto the back-garden terrace. Flooring is ceramic tiling. Fitted units to the right with electric hob and wall cupboards. To the left double oven and breakfast bar area. Dishwasher, microwave, fridge with small freezer. Washing machine and tumble drier located to the left in utility area. Boiler and Oil gauge wall mounted to left of Kitchen back door. Spot lighting.
First Floor
13 steps from Hallway lead to 1st floor landing [8’9” x 6’] with 3 bedrooms and family bathroom. All bedrooms are spacious and enjoy views of garden, with rural views and sea glimpses at rear, thermostat radiators and ceiling lights with bedside reading lamps.
Bedroom 1 facing front garden [7’10” x 9’] with pine bunkbeds [2’6”], reading light, small chest of drawers and bedside table, ceiling light. Blackout lined curtains. A fan is available.
Bedroom 2 facing front garden [11’9” x 11’6”] with Twin pine Beds, free standing double pine wardrobe, pine chest of drawers, large wall hung mirror and bedside tables. Blackout lined curtains.
Bedroom 3 facing rear garden and sea glimpses [12’ x 11’9”] with King size pine bed, dressing table, fitted cupboard, large wall hung mirror and bedside tables. Blackout lined curtains. A hair dryer is provided
Family Bathroom [8’ x 6’3”] with Shower over bath, fitted glass shower screen, washbasin under window with blind looking out across back garden and fields, WC, wall hung electrically heated towel radiator, oval mirror, shaver light, thermostat radiator, ceiling light. The flooring is non-slip vinyl tiling.
Second Floor staircase leads to Attic [13 steps]
Master Suite [13’ x 16’] with velux windows looking out over fields and towards the sea. Light and airy room with metal SuperKing size bedframe, pine double wardrobe, dressing table and mirror, chest of drawers, and bedside tables. Hair dryer in drawer.
Off to the right is Ensuite Electric Shower [6’3” x 5’] with slopping ceiling and shower curtain, WC & handbasin. Extractor fan, chrome towelrail, tiled flooring, thermostat radiator.
Garden
Terrace area at the back of Kitchen with Purbeck stone topped table and chairs. Large enclosed mature garden and lawn area child secure.
Additional Information
Mobile phone reception in Worth Matravers is still extremely haphazard, so please be aware of this. New 02 Pylon in Worth Pub Village Car Park provides better mobile signal for some providers.
