Stable Cottage, formally a stable for horses, was built approx. 30 years ago and was converted into a one-bedroom, single storey self-catering holiday home in 2018. The cottage is detached and surrounded by open farmland.  The cottage is located in the driveway of the owner’s home and separated by a gravel driveway approx. 20 metres away from the house.  It is located in the heart of the West Dorset countryside, set in seven acres, in a hamlet of just eight houses, four of which are thatched.  The entrance is on a narrow country lane which is used mainly by local people and the farming community.  The cottage is located adjacent to the lane and has its own private entrance.  Stable Cottage is non – smoking and is suitable for one small well behaved dog.  The cottage is not suitable for children however, a travel cot will be provided for a baby.  The cottage is situated near a barn and land which is used by the owner for storing logs and keeping of pet sheep and 2 or 3 cattle in the summer months.  The nearest village, Cattistock is a 5-minute drive away, or a 40-minute walk.  The village has a grocery shop, post office, tea room and a dog friendly pub.


Pre – arrival

Arrival and parking facilities

The main entrance is on a country lane and is shared with the entrance to the barn.  The private drive for Stable Cottage is immediately to your left behind a large laurel hedge.  There is gravel drive with parking for one car.  Larger vehicles can be parked across the driveway threshold using the yard area for extra space. Alternatively, extra parking can be arranged in the owner’s driveway if needed.  The cottage is accessed through a picket gate and arch and along a garden path at the end of which are three steps down.  There are no streetlights, but the barn, drive and cottage will be light up automatically when you arrive.

Disabled access is available.  Your car can be parked in the owners drive or alternatively very near the back gate.  The driveway is gravelled, but once through the gate the surface is paved and will avoid the steps.


Entrance to the Cottage

A stable door (width 0.76m) which remains unlocked from the outside leads into a small porch.  (2.13 x 2.13) The light switch, coat hooks and key safe are located inside the porch.

Once inside the main door (width 0.73m) you will be in the open plan lounge (4.27 x 4.41m)/ kitchen area (3.65 x 1.22m), which has laminated flooring throughout.  The light switch is on the right-hand wall and spare keys on the left.  Straight ahead is the bedroom door (width 0.7m), the bedroom (3.66 x 4.27m) is carpeted, the en-suite bathroom door (width 0.7m) is on the right and the en-suite bathroom is (2.28 x 2.43).


The lounge and kitchen area

This area is open plan, the kitchen is located at the far end of the room on the left-hand side.  As you enter the through the front door, you will see a large three-seater sofa, coffee table, a cupboard which is supplied with books and a wood burner, the TV (there is no DVD player, but the TV is a smart TV with Netflix) is mounted on the wall on a bracket to the right of the wood burner.  The window faces north and looks out over the owners drive and the countryside.  The cottage is private and not overlooked.  To the left, you will find a table and chairs for two and double French doors which are south facing, which open onto a small patio/courtyard area which is adjacent to the lane.  The area is screened from the road with trellis and a tall hedge and is not overlooked.

The kitchen is equipped with an electric oven, electric hob, extractor fan, washing machine, fridge with small ice box, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and kettle.  The water in the kitchen is heated by a small electric water heater located under the sink.  The kitchen has a butler sink with a removable wooden draining board.  The window is south facing.  The main fuse box is located inside the wall storage cupboard.  There is also a wall mounted shelf unit to the right.  The fire alarm and carbon monoxide alarms are located at this point.



The bedroom is adjacent to the kitchen, the door opens into the room and is hinged on the left.  The single wardrobe is situated behind the door, the dressing table is on the left under the south facing window.  There is King size bed, the duvet and pillows have microfibre fillings and the duvet cover is 100% cotton.  2 bedside tables with lamps, a shelf unit with baskets for storage and a full-length mirror.  There is also a window which faces north with views across the countryside.  The owners home can be seen from the left from this window but is not directly overlooked.


En-Suite Bathroom

The door to the bathroom is hinged on the left, the flooring is cushioned vinyl.  The is a quadrant walk in shower, large console sink with porcelain legs, large wall mirror, standard height WC, free standing floor cupboard, extractor fan and two north facing windows with pull down blinds.



The archway from the drive leads through a picket gate (0.91m wide) to a lawn area and shrubs, leading to three steps down to a paved patio/courtyard area with a bistro table and two chairs, small barbecue, flower beds, gravelled area with shrubs, retractable washing line with two hook points and an outside tap.



We feel that Stable Cottage is suitable for one small well behaved dog.  The garden has been fenced/trellised and has two gates.  Dogs must be kept under control as we have livestock and not left unsupervised inside or outside the cottage.  The owners have three toy breed dogs and an elderly Labrador.  We will provide a small fleece blanket, a towel and two small bowls for your dog.


Barn and Yard area

The owner is working farmer, so the yard has parking for the land rover, trailers and various machinery which occasionally will be in use, the log splitter, all terrain vehicle (ATV) and chainsaw are not used daily and noise will be kept to a minimum as much as possible and not used in the early morning.

Logs for Stable Cottage will be available from our wood yard on request.  The first basket will be supplied free of charge and for sale at £5 per basket thereafter in the colder months, but if you would like logs in the summer please ask.


Swimming Pool

The heated, outdoor swimming pool (approx. 6m x 13m and approx. 1.25m deep increasing to 2.2m deep) will be available from June – Sept.  It is situated at the bottom of the owner’s garden and is accessed via a short walkway through the paddock.  The are three steps down to the paved pool area.  The pool is shared with the owners.  Guests of Stable Cottage will have designated time slots, during which they will have private use of the pool.  The pool is secluded and is not over looked.  The pool house and changing area has a WC and shower facilities.  Towels and sun loungers will be provided.  Please do not use the towels from the cottage for swimming towels.


Pool users are asked to adhere to the following safety rules please


  • Enter and exit using the pool ladder only
  • Please keep dogs on a lead when walking through the paddock to the pool area
  • Keep all gates shut at all times
  • Dogs must be supervised at all times and not allowed in the water
  • Take care when walking on wet surfaces (No running or Diving)
  • There are no lifeguards and visitors will sometimes be alone on the premises – please bare this in mind.
  • Swimming will be at your own risk and responsibility and not the owners, nor Dorset Cottage Holidays.
