There are few places in England quite as cinematic as Durdle Door. The great limestone arch rising from the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth Cove has a quality that cameras seem to love – the way the rock frames the sea, the drama of the cliffs above, the glittering shingle beach below. It is perhaps no surprise that for decades, filmmakers, directors, and music video producers have made the journey to this corner of Dorset to capture something they simply cannot find anywhere else.

Whether you are planning a visit after watching a favourite film, you are a Bollywood fan curious about the filming location from Housefull 3 at Durdle Door, or you simply want to know everything that has ever been filmed at this iconic landmark — this is your complete guide.

Ryan Gosling spotted in Dorset while filming

Project Hail Mary (2026)

The most recent — and arguably the most talked-about — production to use Durdle Door is the science fiction blockbuster Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling. Released in UK cinemas in March 2026, the film became the biggest box office hit of the year, taking over £120 million in its first weekend alone.

Based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, the film follows Ryland Grace — a schoolteacher turned astronaut who wakes alone on a spacecraft with no memory, only to realise he is humanity’s last hope of preventing the sun’s destruction. Among its most memorable and emotionally powerful images is a closing scene set on the beach at Durdle Door, which has reportedly been moving audiences to tears – and our Marketing Manager, Melissa, fell into that group when she watched the film on its opening weekend.

Filming took place over several days in October 2024. The Lulworth Estate temporarily closed the beach, Man O’War Beach, and the car park while a large Amazon MGM film crew worked on location. Locals walking the South West Coast Path at the time were stunned to spot Ryan Gosling himself on the beach, reportedly wearing white chinos and a chunky knit cardigan. Quite a sight on a Dorset morning – and one we are sad to have missed in person!

The Bollywood film at Durdle Door

Housefull 3 (2016)

Long before Ryan Gosling discovered Durdle Door, Bollywood had already made it famous to a global audience of hundreds of millions — and this is still one of the most searched stories about the location.

The 2016 Bollywood comedy Housefull 3, featuring Akshay Kumar and Jacqueline Fernandez, includes several scenes filmed on the beach at Durdle Door, most notably during the smash-hit song Pyar Ki Maa Ki. The film was a massive commercial success in India and across the South Asian diaspora, and its use of Durdle Door introduced the location to an entirely new worldwide audience.

The effect on visitor numbers was remarkable. Durdle Door became a hugely popular destination for Indian tourists making a pilgrimage to the spot made famous by the film, and the Lulworth Estate even added Hindi-language signage to the beach — leading to a rather memorable moment when a translation error turned a simple “no litter” notice into something far more colourful in Hindi. The estate took it in good spirit.

If you are a Bollywood fan searching for the filming location from Housefull 3, you have found it — and the real thing is even more beautiful than it appears on screen.

Thomas Hardy's

Far From the Madding Crowd (1967 & 2015)

Thomas Hardy set his novels in the fictional county of Wessex — his literary interpretation of Dorset. It makes perfect sense, then, that adaptations of his work keep returning to the real Dorset countryside, including Durdle Door.

The 1967 adaptation, directed by John Schlesinger and starring Julie Christie and Terence Stamp, is a classic of British cinema. Durdle Door features in the memorable scene where Stamp’s character swims in the sea near Scratchy Bottom, the small valley just west of the arch. Bere Regis, Abbotsbury, and Maiden Castle all feature too, making it something of a love letter to the Dorset landscape.

Nearly fifty years later, the 2015 remake starring Carey Mulligan returned to the same county, using Durdle Door again alongside Mapperton House near Beaminster, West Bay, and Sherborne. Both versions are beautiful examples of how the Dorset coast provides an unrivalled period backdrop — and a compelling reason to visit.

Emma Thompson stars in

Nanny McPhee (2005)

One of the most family-friendly appearances of Durdle Door on screen comes in Nanny McPhee, the beloved 2005 children’s film starring Emma Thompson and Colin Firth. The magical nanny takes her charges for a seaside picnic — and that beach is unmistakably Durdle Door.

The production is a testament to just how striking the location is: the beach is not easy to reach, with a steep descent down steps and a narrow path from the clifftop car park. The film crew reportedly had to use a helicopter to deliver their equipment to the beach, rather than attempting to carry it all down the steps. The resulting footage was absolutely worth the effort.

Stephen Fry in

Wilde (1997)

The 1997 biographical drama Wilde, starring Stephen Fry as Oscar Wilde alongside Jude Law and Vanessa Redgrave, features Durdle Door in a poignant scene in which Wilde’s wife, played by Jennifer Ehle, reflects on marriage. The Dorset coastline lends the film a sense of timeless English melancholy that suits the story beautifully, and it remains one of the more understated big-screen appearances of the landmark.
